I write a lot of different stuff. But what I don’t do is chase trends or go where the money is. If I did, I’d be writing romance.
They say, “write what you know,” and I have. The Professional Tourist and Last Dance at the Kitten Club are set in places I’ve been and incorporate settings and situations I experienced into a fictional narrative.
But I also write whatever I happen to enjoy, and connect that to other things I enjoy, in the hopes that you, the reader, see something of yourself in these stories.
A quick glance at my bibliography shows a wide range of genres – contemporary, rom-com, mystery, urban fantasy, zombie apocalypse (sorta), and, of course, science fiction.
Right now that’s where my focus is. I want people to feel like the future is still worth looking forward to, having hope about, even if the present day tries to make us feel otherwise.
But science fiction covers a lot of ground, and my heart always tends to lean toward one classic trope.
What, you were expecting the Millenium Falcon? Well, yeah, for sure. But funnily enough, when I first saw the Eagle 5 from Spaceballs, I was hit by a strange combination of “that’s hilarious” and “…that’s… that’s also kinda cool.”
But, yeah, the idea of a small ship and crew having adventures has always held more appeal to me than something like Star Trek where (except on Lower Decks) only the officers get to have any fun.
I suppose it’s the independence that appeals to me… though talk to anyone with an actual Winnebago, and you quickly learn it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. Still, less of a money sink than a boat!
Point is, it’s not hard to spot the through-line from Star Wars, Spaceballs, games like Elite, shows like Firefly and The Expanse, and not see what got the Get Lost Saga started.
So what has inspired you over and over again, from your childhood to the present day? Let me know!
