One of the authors I’ve had the longest relationship with is Lauren Smith. Before working with her, I had only edited a couple of short novellas, so hers was the first big novel I had to deal with.
The two of us hit it off right away. Turns out Lauren is a full-blown geek with a similar taste in books and movies. This made the editing process a lot more fun, since I could make references to Star Wars or the Princess Bride or Braveheart and have her instantly click to my meaning (and often laughing in the process).
More importantly, we both viewed the importance of story and characters in similar ways. Her first book with me was the start of a seven-part series called The League of Rogues, so when I made some suggestions to develop the villain more to make him an interesting and compelling antagonist throughout the series arc, she was very receptive. We had a blast working out the details on Hugo Waverly, which come through more and more as the series goes on and builds towards its exciting climax.
The League of Rogues is a series I’ve had a lot of fun working on, managing to go beyond what you would expect of a Regency romance by being both funny and exciting as well.
The series is up to book 3 now, and I’m currently editing book 4. It’s hit the Amazon bestsellers list several times in different ways, most recently because of the book deal Lauren has going on.
In anticipation of the fourth book in the series being released (Wicked Rivals), she’s made the first book in her series, Wicked Designs, available for free from several outlets until August 7th.
